Knowledge Translation to Improve Quality of Cancer Control in Canada
Across the cancer control continuum, research advances have the potential to reduce the incidence, mortality and morbidity of disease in Canada. However, the uptake and application of any clinical advancement is challenging, variable, and with rates that are less than optimal. There is often insufficient evidence to guide the specific design and operationalization of effective interventions in real-world settings. Thus, identification and analysis of effective strategies to improve the uptake of cancer control options is an important step if the full benefits of advancement in cancer control are to be realized. Further, identification of areas where additional research efforts are warranted will help focus research activities in areas of highest priority.

The “Knowledge Translation to Improve Quality of Cancer Control in Canada: What we know and what is next” project, was a one-year (2009-2010), pan-Canadian initiative funded and supported by the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC). The project comprised five specific modules, each with its own objective, and the overall aim of the project was to provide a synthesis and overview of the effectiveness of knowledge translation (KT) strategies for cancer control. The results of this project will serve to inform the Ontario (and other provincial) cancer system of effective KT interventions and will guide future provincial research priorities in the area of KT for cancer control.
